Whatever your state calls them, these orders are supposed to protect people from domestic or family abuse. But they are more often used for wrong reasons, such as to dump a boyfriend, to get a leg up in a divorce, to get quick custody of children, or simply out of spite. Courts issue them much too easily, because they are afraid not to, and because the laws are written to make it easy for a judge to issue them on very flimsy evidence.
