Notary Publics can Marry People? I try to learn something new every day. I was speaking to a notary public in Kingsport today. Her business card said: "Notary Public" "Marriage Officiant." She told me that Notary Publics can marry people. I was now curious. We have several Notary Publics in our office so I asked about this and I checked the Tennessee Statute on who can marry people. It turns out there is a LONG list of people that can perform marriages. This includes everyone from "spiritual leaders" (over 18) "having the care of souls" to Federal Judges. The Religious Society of Friends even has a special section. And in 2021the legislature decided in its wisdom that notary publics needed to be added to the list of people that can officiate marriages. So, if you have your marriage license and are in a rush to get married- no, even if you are not in a rush- find a notary public and tie the knot. And all you notaries who are wanting something else to do beyond "stamping" paper- here is a new gig.
