Scam Alert BBB Alert - Student Loan Forgiveness Scams! BBB put out an alert yesterday due to all the publicity surrounding the forgiveness of student loans. The young people struggling with their student loan repayments have now been told that, if they qualify, the Federal Government will forgive thousands of dollars of their loans. But with every promise like this, BBB sees scammers who try to take advantage of the exciting news to rip off consumers by using tricks. The current proposal is that the Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers are eligible for this debt relief if their individual income is less than $ 125,000 or $ 250,000 for households. The DOE may not know their income, so in the coming weeks it will launch a simple internet application. We suggest going to the Department of Education web site to sign up to be notified when the application is available. Remember, this is a free program!
