FAQs

What should I expect at the consultation?

Many people have questions and concerns when first meeting with a lawyer. The consultation is an opportunity to get basic information about your case, and determine whether our attorneys are right for your needs. Our consultations typically last an hour, and give both you and your prospective attorney a chance to get to know each other, and get a snapshot view of the issues in your case.

Is there a fee for an initial consultation?

Yes, in most cases the attorneys at ACS charge a consultation fee. While this fee varies between attorneys, it is a reduced fee from the normal hourly billing rate. When you call to set the initial appointment, the staff can provide more information on the consultation fee.

Can I bring a friend or family member with me?

Some of our clients find it helpful to bring a friend or family member with them for help or support. While our attorneys allow the practice, it is important to be aware that you are not speaking in confidence if you have a friend or family member in the meeting. In many instances that may not have a practical impact, but it is something you should understand when preparing for your consultation.

Should I arrive early?

Yes. We ask clients to arrive early in order to allow time to fill out our client intake forms, and give our attorneys an opportunity to review the form before your consultation. You can also download the forms and complete them in advance. See the forms page for the downloadable versions.

After our initial consultation are you now my attorney?

No. Consulting with a law firm does not create an ongoing attorney- client relationship. In order for ACS to represent you, you must retain the firm financially and sign our client fee agreement. Our attorneys will provide a fee agreement to you at the consultation, and you can take that home with you to review. Please note that any discussion we have during your initial consultation is confidential, and will remain confidential regardless of whether you retain the firm.
