I helped my client find $495 that he would have never received... My client had collected a check from a customer and deposited it. However, I couldn't find this check deposit anywhere. I checked multiple bank accounts in case it got accidentally deposited into a different account etc. I couldn't see it on the statements either but he was sure it got deposited. He got me a picture of the deposited check from the bank to show the date it was deposited. Still, I couldn't find the check and told him to look into it some more. I received a text from him today that said the check had cleared for $55 rather than $550. The bank is working on correcting the error now. If we hadn't caught it, he would have lost $495 just because the bank missed a 0. This is why bookkeeping is SO important. That money could have LITERALLY slipped through the cracks because of a bank error!!! As a bookkeeper, my strongest skill set is attention to detail. Finding those discrepancies and fixing the problem. Making sure everything matches and reconciles 👌 Don't let this happen to you.
