Ready to go solar? Great, but be sure to read and understand that contract before you sign it. Look around your neighborhood and you're likely to see several houses with solar panels recently installed. The state of Illinois is even providing incentives to residents to go solar with tax credits. You can buy, you can lease, you can go solar... but as with all contracts, read and understand it before you do. Some contracts lock you in for a long period, 20 years for instance. Do you understand if you're renting or buying? What happens when you sell your property? If you haven't read the contract and know the answers from reading it, then don't sign! Want a great example? You go solar and decide to lease. The solar company takes care of everything, you pay nothing out of pocket. Your solar panels are installed and guaranteed. If you have roof damage from a hail storm they will even come and remove the panels so the roof can be replaced... but who pays for removal and re-installation? Under many contracts that's the homeowners responsibility ant it will cost thousands. We're not saying don't go solar - just understand what you're agreeing to and if you don't, call a lawyer before you sign.
