It came to my attention that in Salt Lake County the Juvenile Court system is appointing every Juvenile accused offender a public defender regardless of the income of the parents. In todays Tribune Newspaper they profiled a bill that would do that State wide that legislator Weiller is shepherding through the legislature. This may be taking the 6th amendment right to counsel too far. The right to counsel has been found to guaranteed for indigent adults but not for children from affluent families. I understand the need to have accused juvenile delinquents advised of their rights within the system but I think there are alternatives to appointing every accused juvenile delinquent regardless of income a public defender. All accused offenders meet with a probation officer in advance of court. They should be given access to an attorney at that time who can answer questions, inform them of their rights, conduct a financial assessment and if they qualify for a public defender refer them to one.
